Whether you are a beginner or a professional stylist who wants to refresh and deepen their knowledge or better yet, teach them, there are certain skills that every stylist must have and develop throughout his career to satisfy their customers with the best results and advise the undecided. Therefore, today we bring you the different techniques of haircutting to exercise this beautiful work with the best results and efficiency.

There are many ways, forms and techniques of hair cutting, but if you've ever wondered where to start learning, here we show you what are the 4 basic ways to cut hair with scissors and the effects they leave on the style of your clients. Using these cutting techniques will help you add movement and dimension to your client's hairstyle, giving them a unique personality and developing your skills as a stylist.

Four basic haircutting techniques

Basic cutting techniques are the most important in the industry and are skills you should master before venturing into more advanced and cutting-edge techniques. Here are the four basic techniques and the most basic cuts you can achieve with them:

Straight cut technique.

This is a technique that can be done with either scissors or razors. However, the effect obtained will be slightly different depending on which one you use, since with scissors you will get a much more marked effect. To do this you must make a uniform and straight cut in the lock of hair, placing the scissors perpendicularly. In this way, the effect achieved with this cut will be to accentuate the bangs or simply reduce the length of your client's hair.

The most basic cut achieved with this technique is the straight cut with a horizontal line. To achieve this, you can make the cut at shoulder length so that the lengths on each side are evenly spaced. Comb the hair all the way back and cut in a straight line without placing the hair between your fingers. This will even out the lengths and give contour.

Serrated cut technique

The best way to achieve this cut and master the technique is to tilt the scissors slightly and then move in and out of the strand to be cut. This will cause a choppy effect where some ends are longer than others. Using the scissors you will get a more pronounced jagged effect than with the razor, so we recommend using the first option for this cut. This is a technique that you can use to pronounce the finish of the tips of all your cuts, adding a greater dynamism to them.

Paraded cut technique

Among the haircutting techniques, this is one of the most used and requested in hairdressers. It consists of making the cuts in each strand unequally, so that each of the locks ends with a different length. To do this, we recommend using scissors, because with them you don't run the risk of just cutting the strand without parading. Tighten the strand to be cut tightly and make the cut with the scissors in a quick and safe movement. With this technique you can achieve two great haircuts, the layered cut and the gradient cut.

Layer cut

A very popular cut and very easy to master. The effect sought with this technique is to generate volume and texture throughout the entire mane. To perform this cut you must start from a freshly washed hair and divide it into two parts, leaving the parting line where the client usually wears it. Gather all the hair at the crown and leave only a small section loose at the bottom and trim the ends of this first layer. Then release another small selection of hair to create another layer and trim the ends of the new layer, this time shorter than the previous layer. Repeat the operation until you have cut as many layers as the client's hair will allow. Remember that the more hair you cut from each layer, the more the scaling effect will be.

Gradient cut

Among the haircutting techniques, the gradient cut has managed to stay as a trend within the requirements of customers. In fine hair, the effect will be to give movement and body to the hair, while in thick and thick hair you will achieve lower volume. To apply it, we recommend using specialized scissors that will help you to create more of a gradient while cutting. Simply select strands of different lengths and cut progressively, either straight or diagonally, depending on the desired effect.

Scissors over comb cutting technique

This is a technique that you can use to make very short, low cut haircuts. It is widely used by those who do not have a razor for this kind of very low cuts, and can be used on both women and men.

It essentially consists of placing the comb close to the scalp and cutting with the scissors all the hair that sticks out. With this technique you can achieve shaving cuts without the need of the machine and without cutting as much as you could do with it. The effect is one of very short carpeting that you can combine with other styles and cuts for versatility, or leave the whole cut with this technique to generate more personality and impact.

With these techniques we have reviewed, you will be able to practice the most basic styling cuts in a very simple way, either to put them into practice or to teach them. As you can see, these are very simple techniques whose greatest potential is in the hands that use them, so do not deprive yourself to start practicing from now with these simple techniques.
