As in any other type of medical discipline, the prescription in dentistry -dental prescription- is an extremely important document in any medical-dental consultation process.

That is whyin this article we will show you what a dental prescription is and what its parts are. This way you will be able to make your dental service the most rigorous, adjusting it to the standards that every dental prescription must meet as a fundamental medical and legal document in every dental health center.

What is a dental prescription?

A dental prescription is a medical document that refers to an order issued by a dental specialist. It details the preparation, constitution and dispensing of the medications necessary for the specific treatment of the patient. It is a document that has a specific degree of legality, since it functions as a legal proof of the medical process outlined in it.

The dental report is a document that must be duly filed, both by the treating party and the treated party. Therefore, it should always be duly identified with the date, signature and seal of the professional or dental treatment center that issues it, since it is this information that is usually useful in legal cases and judicial proceedings that may require it.

This document is usually so important that we recommend the following:

  • Compose it in a computerized manner to facilitate its reading.

  • Always avoid any kind of amendments, erasures or erasures in the body of the document.

  • Write it in the official language of the country in which you are issuing it.

Types of dental certificates and their elements

According to the law, only medical, dental and veterinary professionals, whose professions qualify them for such functions, and who have the required legal registrations before the medical academy and the governmental structure, are able to prescribe medicines.

Thus, the issuance of any kind of dental prescription by any other kind of non-dentist professional will be considered a crime. Thus, the writing and issuance of any dental prescription must comply with rigorous and specific procedures to guarantee its veracity and the health of patients.

There are two main types of dental prescriptions in the legal medical-dental field: ordinary dental prescriptions and special dental prescriptions.

Ordinary dental reprice

This type of dental report mainly gathers the sender's data in order to facilitate communication between the prescriber and the patient. It usually has a header containing data such as name, office address, telephone number, e-mail and address, and should always have the signature and data of the treating dentist clearly referenced. In addition to the above-mentioned header, every ordinary dental prescription has a superinscription with Rp/; which stands for take, dispense or receive.

The ordinary dental repro has the following parts:

  • The inscription: this is the most significant body of the dental récipe, as it is where each of the medicines to be prescribed is described and which, depending on the type of formula they require, can be either proprietary formula or magistral formula.

  • Patented formula medicines: as its name indicates, it refers to already patented preparations that can be easily found in different drugstores or pharmacies. In order to register this type of formulas, it is necessary to register their name - whether generic or commercial -, their pharmaceutical form - according to units of mass or volume that correspond to the country depending on the use of the metric system -, and the number of units that the patient must acquire to complete his treatment.

  • Magistral formuladrugs : these indicate drugs that must be prepared in pharmacies according to a specific preparation. These are not branded and are dispensed by the dentist. The use of magistral formulas in dental prescriptions is decreasing, due to the massive use of generic medical formulas.

The registration of a dental prescription for a master formula has the following parts: 1. has the following parts:

  • The subscription: with the instructions for the preparation of the drug. This is addressed to the pharmacist in charge of the preparation.

  • The signature: which are the indications and contraindications for the patient to properly use the repaired product. They are generally added to the bottle or container containing the medicine once printed by the pharmacist.

  • Indications: these are the compendium of instructions addressed to the patient for the correct use of the medicine according to the specific treatment.

Other necessary indications that all dental prescriptions must have, according to their legal nature, are the wet seal containing the name of the professional and his identification number, as well as the dentist's professional registration number. Likewise, some medications (such as antibiotics, benzodiazepines and weak opioids) must have the patient's name and identification number on the dental prescription.

Finally, after registration, the dental prescription must bear the signature of the practitioner and the date of issue. In this way, the information contained in the document at the time of enrollment is given veracity, which means that it cannot be delegated to any person other than the practitioner, as this would constitute a crime.

The special dental recipe

These comprise a type of dental prescription with a different character from the ordinary one, since they are generated by medical or governmental institutions and control the prescription of highly addictive drugs such as narcotics, sedatives, opioids, and other types of psychotropic drugs. This type of dental prescription is non-transferable, legally registered and has a specific validity according to the laws of each country.

Parts of a dental prescription

Despite its resemblance to the general medical prescription, the dental prescription has a specific structure and characteristics that characterize it. A dental prescription has the following parts:

  1. Header: perhaps the most important part of any dental prescription. It contains the professional's data such as identification number, office address and telephone numbers. Located at the top center of the report, it helps to correctly identify the professional and guarantees the legality of the document. After the specialist's data, the header should contain the patient's data such as first and last names, age or identification number, among other data.

  2. Body: this part of the dental prescription consists of a blank area where the specialists place the specific data of the medication, such as name, type of presentation, volume, form or route of administration to the patient, dosage and duration of use.

  3. Information sheet: this is an additional sheet attached to the dental prescription that is generally used by the health professional, where the use of the specific medication is justified according to the patient's need and the severity of his or her case. It usually specifies some of the adverse symptoms of the treatment.

As you will see, every dental prescription is a legal document that can not only function as an input in judicial processes, but also regulates the normative use of some medications that without a prescription can generate medical problems in specific patients, in addition to other situations of an illicit nature.

Its importance is evident, since it protects the patient, registers and coordinates his treatment and functions as a general record of his dental medical process.

A responsible and scientific dental practice must have the formal issuance of each and every one of its specific medications. That is why ensuring its correct issuance is a guarantee of a legal and first line dental procedure.
